A few weeks ago my mother lost a friend. A woman she had known since before they started school passed away. They had stayed in touch for over 80 years. I'm Facebook friends with some people I knew in High School. People just don't have life long friends anymore.

A childhood friend of mine since we were about six years old was in my wedding, and I talk to her (at least exchange messages) at least once every couple of weeks. We don't see each other all the time, because we live a couple of hours apart, but... we'll be 46 this year, and we're lifelong friends so far.

McCoy, I'm sorry for your mother's loss.
My lifelong friends are the ones I made when I first started playing RPG's and centered around the very first Champions game we played together. The campaign lasted over 2 years and everyone who participated still stay in touch in person where possible or via Facebook. We did have a reunion of sorts a little over 3 years ago when one member of our group committed suicide due to losing his job during the financial crisis. I still miss him to this day.

I have many life-long friends scattered all around. We keep in touch through our own gaming sites and play games through Skype when we can. Mostly we're assured to see each other at least once a year at our own private con. To date, my first and best friend are hitting our 44th year as besties. We've known each other since we were 3/4. He and I"discovered" D&D together at the age of 7/8. I'm still in contact with at least 15 other dear friends from my college days due to this con and, to be honest, Facebook has reconnected me to high school friends I otherwise would never have seen again. Believe it or not, I still have several high school friends that have nothing to do with gaming that I keep in touch with and visit when I can.

I have at least four lifelong friends, although I met one of them only ten years ago (only being comparative). My life would be empty without them.

I have a few friends I've known since the 4th grade, though I keep sporadic contact with them.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother's loss, McCoy. Be well.
Most of my lifelong friends can be tied to gaming.

Belated condolences. Your mom and her friend were blessed to have a lasting friendship.
I have a couple of friends I've known since college. I've drifted away from all my childhood and high school friends.
