I really like the 6e Basic Rules. I know there was some criticism that some of the powers were left out, but around 95% of the game is there. So leaving that aside, I think it does a great job of presenting Hero in a very slim format. There's example characters, an extended combat example, and example builds of powers, spells, etc. I gave a friend who was new to RPGs a copy and he read it through and learned the game overnight. And I understand that Sidekick from 5e was very similar.
But these products didn't really make a dent in the general perception that Hero is a massive, complicated game. Most gamers with a little exposure to Hero (but often with an opinion) weren't really aware of these books.
I think the company could have been forgiven for thinking that these products made 5e and 6e much more accessible. But it just didn't work out that way in bringing in the masses.
Why was that? Just a marketing fail?
Personally I think it would have been great to market the Basic Rules with small genre books. BR plus a 100-page Fantasy Hero or a 100 page Champions.
Anyway, I know that this is kind of moot now after Champions and FH Complete have been introduced for similar reasons, but just wondering what others think.

Partly I think they weren't known about, they were not promoted or even carried in stores around here. I had to order my basic rules book separately.
Then, when I got the 6th edition basic rules I noticed that some rules were actually different and stuff was left out, so its pretty much not even the same game which is very annoying.

I agree. They were pretty much incomplete. At the very least they needed an upgrade PDF, to give you the missing stuff.

Sidekick (and Basic) are outstanding books. I have heard it frequently that Hero Games doesn't print textbooks -- yeah, they print textbooks. The Sidekick is a way you can learn to play the game.
The reason Sidekick didn't sell? Hero Games is too much of hardcore gamers and not enough starters.

Sidekick was not successful because it was not Shiny enough!

As I recall, the was no official support for Basic. And I remeber one poster kinda got jumped about a rules question until everyone realized he was using Basic and I thought to myself rhat this set a bad image on the boards. We’ll never know how many potential sales soured because causul players heard Basic isn’t a real game. Seriously, why should I drop $120 for two books on a game I don’t know if I’ll like versus $20. Btw I have Basic, I finally was able to get fifth rev. then 6th was announced. Now that I have Champions Complete though, I have embraced 6th. Still I can justify $40 not a total of $120 though.

I agree. They were pretty much incomplete. At the very least they needed an upgrade PDF, to give you the missing stuff. Basic was upfront on the powers that it left intentional. That being said, you probably could build any character that was presented in 3rd ed and previous and I’ll hazard even 4th. and weren’t those games playable? And I’m wondering what soecific rule change CT is referring to as changed in Basic? I’m curious as to see if they weren’t just a simplified version of a rule which is usually presented as an option anyways.

Crusader would be a minor bump to convert to Basic due to his shield using missile deflection. MD as we know it disappeared in 6th and Deflection and Block ranged attacks aren’t really covered in Basic. Solution? Just buy it as extra DCV OAF and perhaps a Dex roll and only with Dodge maneuver. Yes it works a little different than Blocking ranged attacks but end result is the same and still is legal.

I think that 6e Basic failed because it was not cheap enough or simple enough for an introductory product. It was also incomplete, so it couldn't be used as a, "pocket guide" to the system. I don't know who Hero thought would buy it.

I think most gamers didn't think they needed it
