Discussion on the official boards and Facebook about the positional vs. build-based combat games led me to think on what it was I was really missing. I pulled out Danger International, Justice Inc., and the other pre-4e games and went through them. All of that came together in what I'm calling Low Heroic gaming. I'd love for folks to look it over and discuss it!

Not bad! Bookmarked so I can read it more thoroughly.
Is play in 6e that different from previous editions? I stopped at 5e, which was pretty similar to 4e.

It's a trend that started in 4e. I'm going to speculate that having everything in one book made it the default assumption that when you ran a game that you would be using just what's in the one book. In FH1e for instance, you had a subset of the full powers rules, and sometimes you'd have to go through some gyrations to get exactly the effect you wanted, and some just weren't there unless you imported them from Champions. In Robot Warriors or Danger International, there were no powers at all, so you didn't have to start by saying "I'm running a game with no powers" and hoping everyone bought in. In 4e and beyond, OTOH, everything is there, so you start by looking at everything.
In constraint lies creativity, IMO.

Interesting. I have the original Fantasy HERO and 2nd edition Champions, but I never got to play them. I'll take another look at the books.

Do you by any chance have the Spell Book and/or Magic Items supplements for the original Fantasy Hero? There were some creative ways to get around missing stuff. Like, there's no Clinging in FH, but there was a magic item that let the user climb walls, using Flight: Must Touch Surface. Things like that.

I don't have the original FH supplements except for the Robin Hood setting. I didn't buy anything related to HERO Games after that until 4e came around.

I didn't do a lot of importing from other games BITD, the exception being using the MERP fumble/critical hit tables into AD&D (and that started with the other folks in my group). But then, I didn't know anyone who was familiar with HERO until the 1990s.

First time I looked at them. I really like them, but I rarely run big time Supers games. I am more interested in SciFi, espionage, and post-apocalyptic. Definitely trying these out the next time I run a campaign.
