Hero Designer Source Code - HS NewsWhat do you all think brought this on? Has Chris's project with Hero Lab influenced this change? Is this Hero's way of distancing themselves away from Dan? VERY interesting.

I'm not sure Dan knows or much cares about what I'm doing with Hero Lab. A couple of years he opened up the source to a few who asked for it... I think this is probably something he was planning for a while.
I actually kind of thought it was him getting his hooks into them further, TBH.

Here is what I know. I have been working pretty closely with Dan the last year. He has been a big help to me. And yes I have seen his posts on the forum when people ask him questions.
Some of the features I would like to implement for Hero Combat Manager would really require reading the hdc file directly, instead of using an exported Combat Record. That hdc/xml is a bear. It would be so easy to screw it up, plus if there are any changes to the format my program would be toast. As I talked to Dan about this he agreed that it would be very hard to recreate the code he already has. It is try I could have my program dynamically find where HD was installed and then use that as a library to get at the files. But that also has issues. We continued to talk - which pretty much lead to the idea that it would be great to have access to the actual source code and build off of that.
About a week after that discussion the HD Developers forum opened up. And a small group of people were given access to the code & the developer forum.
Right now I am trying to get Dan to consider using Git as a source repository and make it a read only repository for the subscribers. The advantage is that anyone who develops can always do a pull of the latest changes and stay in sync.
I have looked at Dan's code and it is massive. It is actually pretty well written. Dan has a 'day job' and I don't know what else he has on his plate but I think the idea of making massive changes to HD is just too much to even consider for him.
Tasha and Chris you have a lot more history with the current people involved at Hero Games. I am just reporting on my experience.

Dan's temper has done a lot of damage to the Hero Games Community. At the same times he's helping it by hosting the Hero Games board and working on Hero Designer.
Thank you for your insights into the Source Code Release. That makes a ton of sense.

Honestly, while I subscribe to HD, I'd rather see a HeroLab version, since I use that for almost everything else I play.

I've been tempted to sign up for it, but at the moment $75 (since I don't have a current sub) is a bit much.
Perhaps when life settles down (ha!) I'll check it out. (As if I need another project...)
I don't think it's either case of hooks. I think Dan just has gotten HD where he wants it, but others could do stuff with it. Hopefully bluesguy is successful getting him into git.
