MUSIC • KEVIN KINER
Check out his Hell On Wheels soundtrack work for music to play during your Firefly game. Lots of great stuff in the other titles as well.

Cool. I have tried using music to help with the ambience of the game, but it never quite worked out.

Music provides inspiration during creation time for me.
What I found works better than music is ambient sound. If you are in an underwater environment, something with the hum of machinery and the occasional sound of the water itself is gold. In space, basically the hum of machinery with the occasional "beep" noise to indicate a sensor or communication device finished some task. That sort of thing. I keep it just high enough that it can be heard without too much distraction. You can even have the occasional change. For instance, if you are on the High Desert, there are plenty of wind CDs. When you get to Goodsprings, you can throw in some sort of saloon buzz. On the streets, you might have something with the hustle and bustle of people moving to and fro. As long as it isn't too intrusive, you should be alright. Keep in mind that turning up the aforementioned saloon music to represent the noise the characters have to communicate through may not be obtrusive. If combat settles in, drop the volume.
