The software itself can do a quick reload, so it's not a huge issue. But there's an awful damn lot of XML.

I've been poking at a HERO System template for a few weeks, here and there. So far I've got Characteristics with their point costs, except that they all have a base value of 10. I can't seem to figure out how to give some of them a base value of 10 and others a base value of 2, 3, 4, 20. Edit: I spoke too soon. Got it.

Savage Worlds has a pretty decent UI for choosing Skills. Their Superpowers/ Arcane powers also has a UI that should be pretty workable for Hero. BTW I like the functionality. I'll send you the Character sheet logo soon. Photoshop, I am good at

Are you intending to replace HD with Hero Lab for creating characters?

Has anyone here fooled around with using Hero Lab for a Hero Character Generator? It has the benefit of being non java and supports Windows, Mac OS and iPad (with support for Android coming Soon (tm)). It would also have a nice benefit of gaining better access to Realm Works Campaign Management Software. Just curious about this: what is the benefit of being non-Java? I know Java doesn't work on iPad or Android, but the advantage is that it runs on Windows/Mac/Linux? Are you just having technical issues with Java or is there some other problem?

Besides not running on mobile devices, Java is just slow and resource intensive.

Current list of things to do: - Calculate and display Characteristic rolls (9 + (CHA/5))
- Populate skill list with point costs and associated roll
- Come up with some kind of version control for all of these XML files

Besides not running on mobile devices, Java is just slow and resource intensive. Those three things are true. But.... Java allows a developer to build an application that runs on multiple platforms and maintain one code base.

The main benefit to working with Hero Lab IMO is that it's not controlled by one developer whose attitude is "my way or the highway".

Well, what I was actually after when I asked about Java was something of your requirements for a character builder.
For example, would a web app work? (Web app = HTML and JavaScript running inside a web browser.) Those really do run everywhere, since all platforms support a web browser. However it's also likely to be a bit resource intensive as communication with a server isn't going to be as fast as a native library. Also, an internet connection to the server would be required, so you couldn't use it offline.
I don't use character builders or dice rollers so I'm wondering how folks who do like to use them. Do you typically have an internet connection available when you're editing or view your characters? It might be helpful for some other folks to understand what needs to happen here. Of course, my web app idea might come to nought so continuing to work with Hero Lab is a good idea too.
On that note, I gave Hero Lab a quick look. The video review I watched showed a full GUI interface (for Pathfinder). Is there some documentation on the XML stuff you said you were working on? I didn't see it right away if there is.

A web app would certainly work, though on my old first gen stupidPad pretty much everything crashes unless it's static HTML. There's a wiki for it here but it's kind of spotty. I'm not too worried as I tend to learn by doing and pattern matching.

One thing about Hero lab is that when you launch it you get a list of games. If we could get a Hero Lab plug in blessed by Hero, that could mean some mind share for new players. Though at this point I would be VERY happy with a solution that doesn't make me deal with that certain someone from the Hero boards. On top of that. Hero lab already has an iPad version that reads character files (only works for Pathfinder so far) they are going to open that functionalty to all Hero Lab game systems soonish. So that would allow people to FINALLY have a solution that supports tablets, unlike Hero Designer.

If we could get a Hero Lab plug in blessed by Hero I would be very surprised if that happened I have looked at the HD code and there is a lot of code in there. Hero Combat Manager has maybe 10% as much code and even though I did a redesign so that I could separate out many of the parts of the code that can't be ported to Android, I am still not sure if I could port HCM to an Android device.
