Has anyone here fooled around with using Hero Lab for a Hero Character Generator? It has the benefit of being non java and supports Windows, Mac OS and iPad (with support for Android coming Soon (tm)). It would also have a nice benefit of gaining better access to Realm Works Campaign Management Software.

I haven't tried it yet. Does it have native Linux support?

I haven't tried it yet. Does it have native Linux support? Not that I am aware of. I guess you would have to use WINE.

WineHQ shows it as being a Gold app. I may have to check it out.

Oh the other nice thing about Hero Lab is that you can completly run the character from the program. Assigning conditional penalties as they show up. Keeping track of all consumables. It's a really great program that most people only use to create characters. If I was the owner of Hero Games I would Ditch Hero Designer and find someone to create a Hero Lab Template.

According to the Hero Lab wiki, it stores everything as XML. Hmmm.

I've heard a lot of good things about Hero Lab. Apparently it supports Pathfinder (which I'm currently playing) and Savage Worlds (which I'm currently writing and doing demos for). I haven't been super-active in the Hero community lately, aside from keeping in touch with (almost) everyone -- I'm not currently running or playing anything Hero related -- but this is still very interesting. Oh yes.

I'd be down for it. I like a Multi Platform/System tool....

My wife and I were just talking about this yesterday. I've been using Hero Lab for a few years now and I'd say it's my favorite character generator. It has a built in combat tracker, dice roller and, at least with Pathfinder, it has a semi-intelligent sheet for the iPad. I would easily drop the money for a Hero System port. Alternatively, if anyone knows programming code, you can make your own and share it for use. There's been talk of a GURPS Lite set from the fan base.

I have some Christmas money I've been trying to figure out how to spend. I'll look into this some more.

I've bought and downloaded Hero Lab and the Authoring Kit, and under Wine my system has had no trouble whatsoever with it so far.

If someone can get a hero system version built I'd certainly appreciate having an alternative to Hero Designer. Its a good enough program, but the interface is clunky and it has too many restrictions for a hero toolkit.

I wish it had an IDE. It's all hand-editing XML files. Which is not terrible, but... I really wish it had an IDE.

I wish it had an IDE. It's all hand-editing XML files. Which is not terrible, but... I really wish it had an IDE. Yeah, the Development environment isn't that developed, nor is it very well documented. Which from what I am seeing of Realm Works is a nasty habit they have (not Documenting).
